Here are some fun facts about Thanksgiving today:

1- Californians are the largest consumers of Turkey in the United States.

2- About 52 million turkeys are sold in the US for the Thanksgiving celebrations.

3- Each year, the average American eats somewhere between 16 – 18 pounds of turkey.

4- Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States.

5- Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the US, where it is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season.

Fun turkey facts:

1- Turkeys have poor night vision.

2- The average weight of a turkey purchase at Thanksgiving is 15 pounds.

3- A 15 pound turkey usually has about 70% white meat and 30% dark meat.

4- The heaviest turkey ever raised with 86 pounds, about the size of a large dog.

5- The five most popular ways to serve leftover turkey is a sandwich, stew, chili or soup, casseroles, and as a burger.

6- Turkey has more protein than chicken or beef.

7- Turkeys have 3,500 feathers at maturity.

8- According to the Smithsonian, the wild turkey was hunted nearly to extinction by the early 1900’s, when the population reached a low of around 30,000 birds. Restoration programs across North America have brought the numbers up to seven million today.

9- Male turkeys gobble, while hens do not. They make a clucking noise.

10- Commercially raised turkeys cannot fly.

11- Turkeys have heart attacks. The United States Air Force was doing test runs and breaking the sound barrier while nearby turkeys dropped dead with heart attacks.

12- A large group of turkeys is called a flock.

13- It takes 75 – 80 pounds of feed to raise a 30 pound tom turkey.

14- A 16 week old turkey is called a fryer. A 5 to 7 month old turkey is called a young roaster.
